What are Psilocybin Mushrooms?

British Columbia is the second largest mushroom-producing province in Canada, after Ontario.

While the main crops there are different sizes of white and brown colored strains of Agaricus button mushrooms – psilocybin mushrooms in the area have also been widely popular in use – especially for their spiritual and therapeutic properties.

Psilocybin Mushrooms, also known as ‘magic mushrooms’, have been used for centuries by various cultures for their culinary and therapeutic benefits.

Can you grow Psilocybin Mushrooms at home?

Growing your own psilocybin mushrooms at home can be an exciting and rewarding experience, allowing you to have a sustainable supply while maintaining control over the cultivation process.

In this guide, we will walk you through the essential steps to successfully grow psilocybin mushrooms in the comfort of your own home – since it is very much possible. However, the right controlled environments and the right equipment is necessary.

Here are a few things you need for cultivating and growing psilocybin mushrooms at home:

  1. Choosing the right species
  2. Gathering the necessary supplies
  3. Mushroom spores
  4. Growing substrate
  5. Sterilization equipment
  6. Containers
  7. Lighting
  8. Hygrometer and Thermometer

Necessary Strategies for Psilocybin Mushroom Growth?

  • Choosing the right mushroom species:

Psilocybin mushrooms come in various species, each with its growth requirements and potency levels. Some common species suitable for home cultivation include Psilocybe Cubensis and Psilocybe Mexicana. Research and choose a species that aligns with your preferences and level of experience.

  • Gather the Necessary Supplies:

To begin growing psilocybin mushrooms, you will need a few essential supplies. These include mushroom species, growing substrate, sterilization equipment, containers, lighting, hygrometer and thermometer.

  • Mushroom spores:

Obtain spores from a reputable vendor or trusted cultivator. Ensure they are of good quality – and obtained legally.

Necessary Strategies for Psilocybin Mushroom Growth
  • Growing Substrate:

Common options of these include grain (such as rye or wheat), or a mixture of vermiculite and brown rice flour (BRF).

  • Sterilization equipment:

A pressure cooker or autoclave is required for sterilizing the growing medium and tools.

  • Containers:

Glass jars or plastic bags are also needed for the colonization phase, and later, a suitable fruiting chamber would also be required.

  • Lighting:

Natural light or growing lights would be needed to stimulate fruiting.

  • Hygrometer and thermometer:

These are needed to monitor temperature and humidity levels.

Is maintaining a clean and controlled environment essential?

Maintaining a clean and controlled environment is crucial for successful mushroom cultivation.

Here’s what you need to do before setting out to grow Psilocybin mushrooms at home:

  • Sterilize your growing equipment:

You need to thoroughly clean and sterilize all containers, tools, and surfaces (using a pressure cooker or autoclave).

  • Prepare the growing substrate:

Following a trusted recipe for your chosen substrate is crucial. It usually involves mixing grains or BRF with water and vermiculite, then sterilizing the mixture.

  • Inoculating the substrate:

In a sterile environment, introduce the mushroom spores or mycelium to the substrate using a sterile syringe or inoculation loop.

  • Colonization and Fruiting:

After inoculation, your mushrooms will undergo two main phases – colonization and fruiting.

What would consist of a successful growth cycle?

By following these steps afterwards, you can ensure a successful growth cycle:

  • Incubation:

Place the inoculated substrate in a warm and dark location with temperatures around 24-27 degrees Celsius (75-81 degrees Fahrenheit) to encourage mycelium growth. Maintain proper humidity levels by periodically misting the container.

  • Transfer to the fruiting chamber:

Once the substrate is fully colonized with mycelium, transfer it to a fruiting chamber. This can be a large plastic container or a purpose-built grow tent. Additionally, maintain humidity levels of around 90% and provide indirect light.

  • Harvesting:

As the mushrooms develop, they will mature and form caps. At this stage, harvesting them by gently twisting or cutting them at the base is necessary – being careful not to disturb the rest of the substrate.

  • Drying and storage:

After harvest, dry the mushrooms thoroughly using a desiccant or a dehydrator. Store them in airtight containers in a cool, dark place.

Here are a few other things you need to keep in mind about Psilocybin Mushrooms

Controlled substances:

Psilocybin – the psychoactive compound found in psilocybin mushrooms, is usually listed as a Schedule 1 controlled substance – those that are considered to have a high potential for abuse. For this reason, use these mushrooms carefully and respectfully.

Compost:

Mushrooms require ‘compost’ to grow. Compost contains carbon sources that come from straw and from animal manure, which contains residues of vegetable matter used as animal feed.

About 2,000 cubic yards per week of dry poultry waste is used in mushroom media production, which plays a large and beneficial role in reducing excess nutrient load.

Exceptions for Medical or Research Purposes:

Some jurisdictions may have exceptions or regulations for medical or scientific research purposes – in these cases – access to psilocybin is allowed under conditions (such as obtaining licenses or permits from relevant authorities).

Mushroom Spores and Mycelium:

In some jurisdictions, the possession and sale of mushroom spores or mycelium (the vegetative part of the fungus) may be legal – as they do not contain the psychoactive compounds.

Disclaimer:

Before using psilocybin mushrooms, thoroughly research and comply with the applicable laws and regulations in their respective regions. Before embarking on your mushroom cultivation journey, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the legal regulations surrounding psilocybin mushrooms in your province. The legality conditions may vary, so be aware of the laws in your jurisdiction to avoid any legal complications. However, it’s worth noting that laws and regulations are subject to change, and there have been recent developments regarding the use of psilocybin for medical purposes in Canada.
